Realism tattoo ideas
photographic light and texture, no outlines
Realism reproduces photographic light, texture and depth with smooth shading and no outlines. Without a black outline to hold the design together it depends on strong contrast: soft, low-contrast realism can lose definition within 5–10 years and read as a grey shadow. Most artists want at least 12–15 cm for a face to keep features legible, and they warn that black-and-grey realism ages better than colour, and that a realistic portrait is one of the least forgiving things to ask of an inexperienced artist.

Questions people ask
Questions, answered honestly
How long does a realism tattoo last?+
Realism holds up well for 10–15 years as long as the design keeps clear contrast and elements are not packed too tightly. Sun exposure is the variable that matters most.
How small can a realism tattoo be?+
About 10 cm on the longest side. Below that the detail that makes realism recognisable closes up as the tattoo heals and the piece reads as a smudge from a normal viewing distance. Measure on your own skin with a ruler before you agree a size.
Where does realism work best on the body?+
It adapts to most placements. Artists most often push back on the hand and wrist: realism needs a flat, stable surface and the hand both curves and moves; realism needs at least 10 cm and the hand tops out around 8 cm.
